TAKE A BOW TEAM

In a thrilling showdown at the Manchester Arena on Sunday, April 28, 2024, Sheffield Hatters II emerged victorious once again in the Women’s National Basketball League Division 2 (WNBL D2) championship, securing their third consecutive title. The atmosphere was electric as they came up against the Cobham Cobras, ultimately claiming a well-deserved victory with a final score of 77-66.

They led from straight from the tip off with a quick basket before extending to 18 points at times during the game and never looked back. Though, the Cobras fought valiantly to keep the scoreline down.

However, amidst the celebrations, emotions ran high as the Hatters bid farewell to some of our club legends. Steph Gandy, Lisa Riches, Sarah Cooney, and Helen Naylor, stalwarts of the team, announced their retirements, marking the end of an era. They have played together for a few decades now. Their contributions to the sport and the team’s success over the years have been immeasurable, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by fans and teammates alike.

In a fitting tribute to her remarkable career, Steph Gandy delivered a stellar performance in her final game, earning the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP). Gandy’s outstanding display on the court, with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals, showcased her unwavering talent and leadership, further solidifying her status as a basketball icon. Close behind were Sarah Cooney (25pts, 6reb, 5ast, 3blk) and Helen Naylor (15pts, 5reb). Lisa Riches added with a double double (11 rebounds and 11 assists).

The victory not only cements Sheffield Hatters legacy in the WNBL D2 but also serves as a poignant moment to reflect on the team’s journey and the indelible mark left by its departing stars. As they raise the championship trophy once again, Sheffield Hatters II can take pride in their achievements and look ahead to a future filled with new challenges and opportunities.
