Diversity, Legacy and Empowerment

Basketball as a sport is Popular Among The Black And Minority Ethnic Population (BME) In the Active People Survey (APS6), 42% of basketball participants over 16 years old playing once a week were BME. In the very latest APS7 the basketball BME % has increased to 52%

The latest Sport England data shows 26% of people 16+ who play basketball regularly are female. Basketball England has 6,600 female player members – 2,000 under 16 and 4,600 16+. Basketball England also has 386 female members who are active coaches. 300 of these are qualified to at least Level 2. 20% of players are female, but only 5% of coaches are females. Basketball England are actively recruiting more female coaches to attract more women and girls into the game, and Basketball England has a target of 25% female members by 2021.

As a club, we wish to empower young women from our diverse local community to give them the opportunity to have the same experiences that our current strong female role models provide. We want to continue the legacy that our past members have created.

Contributions to Schools / Communities

As a part of our initiatives and goals to help build strong role models in our community, the club has a reputation for providing playing and coaching opportunities for girls and women of all ages.

The strong junior development programme, with teams from under 10 and, up to under 18, has been so successful that many young players move into the senior team and go on to gain international honours. This is mostly due to our senior players and coaches being involved with the local community and regularly visiting many Sheffield primary and secondary schools.

Focus more on role models contribution into schools, mention about taking bookings etc for assemblies or sessions.
