Sheffield Hatters II have clinched their second WNBL D2 playoff championship in two years by defeating City of Birmingham Rockets with a score of 77-57. This victory capped off an unbeaten season for the team.
The defending champions drew on their experience to produce a comprehensive performance, leading the game from start to finish and building a lead that peaked at 27 points early in the second half.
By forcing Birmingham into 28 turnovers, Sheffield remained in control for most of the game, except for a late surge by the Rockets in the third quarter.
Sarah Cooney was a key factor in Sheffield’s dominance, delivering an MVP-worthy performance on both ends of the court. She racked up 36 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals, and seven assists, with her only setback being her fourth foul, which led to a brief period on the bench in the third quarter. This gave Birmingham a glimmer of hope, as they managed to close the gap to 12 points.
However, Cooney’s return to the game stabilized the team. Other notable performances were Steph Gandy with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and Lisa Riches 10 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals.
